U.S. Secretary of War Tex Hagethoth threatened Iran that it would be crushed if it fired upon American ships. This came after U.S. Central Command carried out strikes on three Iranian oil tankers in the Gulf, in response to missile attacks by the Revolutionary Guard targeting two American vessels. An Iranian oil tanker was destroyed, and attacks on U.S. forces were postponed. The United States affirms that Iran possesses a weak fleet lacking naval or air support, and regards Iranian attacks as unjustified, while warning of a severe military response if American ships are targeted. This occurs amid escalating military and economic tensions between the two sides, amid stalled diplomatic efforts.
