Iran faces pharmaceutical shortages and rising costs
Iran is facing a significant crisis in the availability of medicines within the country due to strict U.S. sanctions and a maritime blockade that has impacted shipping routes. This has led to the prices of many medications increasing by more than threefold. Although domestic production covers over 80% of the nation's needs, reliance on imported materials and limited shipping sectors have made it difficult to supply medicines to pharmacies, resulting in notable shortages and an inability to adequately meet patient demand. Additionally, financial sanctions, banking restrictions, and the refusal of international shipping companies have disrupted supply chains, with many factories producing essential medicines— including those for cancer treatment—being damaged by airstrikes. Ultimately, experts warn that continued sanctions could exacerbate the medicine shortage further, increasing the suffering of patients and their families in Iran.
