Guatemala tightens anti-money laundering efforts
A comprehensive law to combat money laundering and terrorist financing has been adopted in Guatemala, aimed at enhancing authorities' capabilities to track suspicious financial flows and pursue assets linked to organized crime. This comes amid efforts to curb activities of armed groups such as Hezbollah. The law intends to end a legislative deadlock that lasted for over 25 years, and it supports cooperation with the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) and its Latin American body. It is expected to reduce the funding channels used by criminal networks, including illegal mining and human trafficking. Additionally, the law focuses on strengthening regional cooperation and information sharing to combat drug trafficking networks and cross-border crime, supported by American programs that train relevant entities on tracking digital transactions and cryptocurrencies.
