Electoral law review and weapon limits
The article discusses Nabih Berri's call to discuss the electoral law at a time of escalating security and political risks in Lebanon, especially with the ongoing southern war and the worsening security situation. This reflects a desire to focus on restricting illegal weapons and establishing the state's sovereignty. Experts and political representatives see this invitation as an attempt to divert attention from the issue of arms control, arguing that the current circumstances demand first addressing security challenges. They believe that discussing the electoral law at this time could lead to wasted time and overlook the importance of sovereignty and stability. Notably, they point out that any discussion of a new electoral law faces constitutional obstacles, particularly with the extension of the current parliament's term, emphasizing that the focus should be on restoring sovereignty and diminishing illegitimate influence before any electoral reforms.
