Kanaan Links Negotiation to Power Balance
The article discusses Deputy Ibrahim Kanaan's stance regarding the challenge submitted by President Joseph Aoun to the Constitutional Council concerning the bank reform law. Kanaan clarified that the challenge is a constitutional right of the president and that it involves a clear violation of constitutional procedures, as the law was passed unconstitutionally by removing the Finance Committee's amendment without a vote on the article, which threatens stability in the working relationship between banking and legislative institutions. He also stressed that the government has not yet developed a clear economic vision in the current budget and called for refraining from increasing taxes. Additionally, he pointed out that regional and international developments directly impact Lebanon, especially amid regional tensions, explaining that the president's diplomatic initiative is an important step in putting Lebanon on the international map, while emphasizing the importance of maintaining national sovereignty within the existing balances.
