Kremlin warns Lithuania of escalation over nuclear arms
Today, the Kremlin warned that lifting the constitutional ban on hosting nuclear weapons in Lithuania, which was approved by the Lithuanian parliament, could lead to significant escalation and renewed tensions in the region. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that the proximity of U.S. military infrastructure to the Russian border and the deployment of nuclear weapons in Lithuania, a member of the European Union and NATO, represent steps toward escalation and do not contribute to regional stability. The Lithuanian parliament had voted to lift the ban, which had been in place for over 30 years since the country gained independence from the Soviet Union, thereby increasing the risk of nuclear tensions escalating in the area.
