Izmir mayor joins Erdoğan's party
Jamil Toguay, the Mayor of Izmir, joined Turkey's ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) after winning the election and making the announcement officially during a ceremony presided over by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. This followed his previous candidacy with the Republican People's Party (CHP) before his resignation in June 2024. This accession is seen as a significant symbolic gain for the party in the city of Izmir, which has long been a stronghold for secular opposition. The move comes amidst a campaign against opposition-led municipalities and the detention of mayors on charges of corruption, which are widely believed to be politically motivated. This development exemplifies the strengthening of Erdoğan’s party’s influence in regions traditionally considered opposition strongholds.
