Global food costs rising impact Lebanon
The Food Importers Syndicate in Lebanon, headed by Hani Bahasli, issued a statement regarding the global rise in food prices in September to their highest level in four years. The statement noted that sugar prices increased by 6.1%, grains by 5.1%, and vegetable oils by 0.9%. Bahasli confirmed that current fluctuations, ranging from 3% to 6%, are normal and do not indicate a global food crisis, as prices are influenced by factors such as supply, demand, and agricultural seasons. He clarified that an increase in oil prices by less than 1% does not signal a new crisis, and that the reasons for these changes include forecasts of the "Nino" phenomenon and the impact of geopolitical conflicts on fertilizer prices, which could maintain upward pressures on food prices in the coming months.
