Lebanon Introduces First Electric Train
The Lebanese initiative to launch the first electric train along the old railway track in the town of Bcharre in the Jabail district represents an important step toward revitalizing rail transportation in Lebanon after decades of hiatus. The project aims to promote sustainable transportation, reduce congestion, and boost tourism by connecting Lebanese regions with environmentally friendly electric energy. Operations have begun gradually, with plans to increase the number of trips from 3 to 20. The train, locally manufactured and powered by solar energy, runs on the route that was previously used for passenger and freight transport since the late 19th century. The project's organizers hope this will be the first step toward reconnecting Beirut with other regions through an integrated rail network, fostering cooperation between the public and private sectors, and allocating the necessary funding in the 2027 budget to support shared transportation.
