Fatwa Aims to Aid Depression Patients
The article discusses a fatwa issued by the Permanent Committee for Islamic Research and Fatwa, headed by Saleh al-Fawzan, in 2025. The fatwa exempts patients with severe depression who lose their ability to perceive and make choices from the responsibility of compensating for missed prayers during episodes of depression. This fatwa is of significant importance because it provides a religious justification to help patients avoid feelings of guilt, especially since depression can impair one's ability to fulfill religious duties. The article emphasizes that this decision represents an important humanitarian step to ease the psychological burden on patients. It coincides with World Mental Health Day and has received mixed reactions—some see it as a lifeline for affected patients, though it may not necessarily reflect the opinions of all Muslims.
