Abbas postpones Palestinian elections to 2027
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas issued a decree canceling the legislative elections scheduled for November 28, 2026, and set new dates for the presidential and legislative elections on September 11, 2027. No presidential elections have been held since 2005, nor legislative elections since 2006. Palestinians face obstacles related to the Israeli conflict that prevent the voting process from being completed in Gaza, making it impossible to hold elections there. Some officials within Fatah have called for dialogue with Hamas and other factions before moving forward, while security conditions and logistical obstacles remain major barriers to completing the electoral process.
