Trump's Gift to Putin Triggers Ukraine Tensions
U.S. President Donald Trump announced an agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin to supply millions of tons of Russian diesel to global markets, aiming to lower fuel prices that had risen significantly due to the war in Iran. The agreement, which came ahead of the midterm elections, provides two shipments of diesel estimated to cover about six days of U.S. demand. However, it has faced criticism from Ukraine and the Washington government, with Zelensky claiming that the deal is "a gift to Putin" and opens up additional resources for Russia to continue its war. The agreement also coincided with the easing of sanctions on Russian diesel, despite ongoing political tensions, raising doubts about its effectiveness in impacting prices, which have increased to an average of $6.28 per gallon compared to $3.68 a year ago. As a result, this move could potentially bolster Russia's ability to support its war efforts, raising concerns among Europe and NATO about escalating tensions in the region.
