Washington detains businessman over Venezuela bribery
The U.S. authorities have successfully arrested businessman Alvaro Polido, whom the United States had been seeking for years due to charges of paying bribes to high Venezuelan officials to secure lucrative government contracts in Venezuela. A federal court in Miami charged him in 2019 and 2021 as part of an investigation related to his former partner, Alex Saab, a previous ally of Nicolás Maduro. The Drug Enforcement Administration and the Department of State offered a reward of up to $10 million for information leading to his arrest. He is scheduled to appear in court in Miami on Tuesday. Polido is accused of corrupting government programs intended to provide food, medicine, and housing, in order to achieve personal gains and exploit the U.S. financial system. He was previously detained in Venezuela in 2023 as part of an anti-corruption campaign against the state oil company.
