Iraq breaks network exploiting loans for kidney sales
The Iraqi authorities have uncovered a criminal network that exploits low-income individuals by offering loans and advances at high interest rates, then pressures them to settle their debts by selling their human organs, particularly kidneys. This falls within a pattern of financial exploitation and blackmail. Security forces have arrested four suspects, including two women, and confiscated records documenting loan transactions and bargaining processes. Investigations indicate that the scheme begins by luring victims through the accumulation of debts, followed by continued extortion and attempts to sell kidneys for amounts ranging from 6 to 50 million Iraqi dinars. The investigations also show that financial hardship is a key factor in attracting victims, with significant health risks involved. The network exploits the desperate need of the needy, and so far, authorities have been unable to determine the number of organ transplant operations or to confirm the existence of official or organized organ trafficking activities.
