Nizar Saougy: A Landmark Legal Victory
The Lebanese Constitutional Council rejected the legal challenge to the General Amnesty Law, with some of its provisions amended, in response to the directives of the Free Patriotic Movement to correct the course of the law. It affirmed that this achievement represents an important human rights step that will be remembered in history. The amendments were made within the framework of preventing amnesty for corruption crimes, to ensure there is no leniency toward cases of theft and corruption. This is especially significant given that the international convention against corruption has been exploited in the past to pass issues related to corrupt individuals.
