The French presidency announced that the navy intercepted a vessel suspected of engaging in illegal fuel trafficking under a false flag south of Réunion Island, at a distance of over 450 nautical miles. The ship, known as D F Peek, is listed on the European sanctions list and is believed to be part of the Russian shadow fleet used to circumvent sanctions since June 2024. Authorities confirmed that an inspection proved the flag raised on the vessel was unlawful, and it was redirected while under naval surveillance. This operation is part of France’s efforts to combat smuggling activities linked to Russia and to target ships exploiting gaps in international sanctions.
