UN Explores South Lebanon Presence
The UN Secretary-General for Peace Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, pointed out that the on-the-ground situation in southern Lebanon remains complex due to ongoing military activities and their impact on the local population. He emphasized the necessity of continued UN support for Lebanon’s efforts to achieve stability and restore its full sovereignty. He also stated that the future of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) will be discussed in the Security Council based on the request of the Lebanese authorities and in line with the security and stability interests of the region. He highlighted the importance of the international community considering Lebanon’s positions during the discussions on extending UNIFIL’s mandate, with the goal of strengthening Lebanon’s security and that of the region.
