UN supports Lebanon as UNIFIL ends
The United Nations confirmed that support for Lebanon's stability continues as the mission of UNIFIL in the south of the country approaches its end in late 2026. The UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations praised the role shared by the temporary peacekeeping force since 1978, despite tensions between Israel and Hezbollah. He emphasized the strong commitment of the international community to support peace, highlighting the importance of international forces to prevent a potential security vacuum and its negative effects, especially in light of Israeli attacks and the occupation of southern villages. For his part, President Joseph Aoun reaffirmed Lebanon's commitment to the presence of UNIFIL, considering that its withdrawal would exacerbate the security situation and warning of negative repercussions on stability.
