Hichel Lakroua on Post-UNIFIL Risks
The Commander of the Lebanese Army, General Joseph Aoun, welcomed UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix. The meeting discussed the situation in Lebanon and the region, with an emphasis on the importance of the role played by the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in restoring stability in the southern part of the country. The attendees also discussed the potential alternatives after the end of UNIFIL’s mandate, warning of the significant danger posed by a vacuum after its departure and the negative impact it would have on stability. Lacroix reaffirmed support for the Lebanese military institution during this critical phase, and their discussions underscored the importance of continued coordination to achieve security in the region.
