South Faces Vacuum UN Warns of Uncertainty
Southern Lebanon is facing significant security threats as the mandate of UNIFIL approaches its end in 2026. There is uncertainty about who will succeed it and concerns over a security vacuum that could threaten stability. The United Nations has affirmed that the withdrawal of international forces from the area would have negative repercussions on security, especially given the ongoing widespread Israeli occupation and Hezbollah's refusal to relinquish its weapons. The UN warns about the difficulties in monitoring the borders and containing tensions after the international force departs. Meanwhile, European Union member states are considering a support and training plan for the Lebanese army; however, this plan does not include border surveillance duties.
