Saeed Discloses $50B in Lebanon Bank Accounts
Governor of Banque du Liban, Kareem Saed, confirmed that talks with the International Monetary Fund are progressing well, and that an agreement is expected to be reached before the end of the year regarding the financial gap law. He explained that the agreement includes providing a clear picture of the available liquidity in the bank and establishing a reliable timetable for repaying depositors’ funds, noting that the total commitments that can be fulfilled are estimated at around $50 billion after deducting violations. He also emphasized that funds disbursed should be specific and verifiable rather than based on unrealistic promises, and that the proposed framework relies on sharing responsibility between Banque du Liban, the government, and the banks, with a clear timeline for restoring depositors’ funds.
