Fires and Riots in Tirana Pressure on Rama
For three days, the city of Tirana, the capital of Albania, witnessed violent clashes between protesters and the police. The protests were led by students demanding educational reforms and improvements in university conditions, and expanded to include calls for the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama amid corruption allegations. Protesters threw stones and firecrackers at riot police, who responded with tear gas and water cannons, resulting in fires and vandalism of public and private property in the city center. The unrest was sparked by rising education costs and declining quality, as well as protests against a tourism project linked to Jared Kushner, which led to violence, injuries, and arrests. Authorities called for calm, while the government condemned the acts of destruction and reaffirmed their commitment to EU accession. Meanwhile, the opposition called for the formation of an interim government and early elections.
