Trump mulls selling sanctioned tankers
The U.S. administration is currently considering reopening sanctioned oil tankers, including those linked to Russia, by selling them to legitimate operators and lifting sanctions against them. The goal is to increase oil transportation capacity and reduce shipping costs. Reports indicate that approximately 13% to 19% of global oil tankers are subject to sanctions, but the age and poor condition of these vessels may diminish the benefits of lifting restrictions. Analysts believe that this move may not lead to a significant reduction in fuel prices, as they consider that the rise in fuel costs is primarily due to escalating risks of war in the Middle East, rather than a shortage of ships alone. Additionally, plans to lift sanctions come amid international and American criticism, especially from European allies, who argue that such measures could bolster Russia's interests at their expense.
