Netanyahu rejected Hamas leader assassinations before October attack
Three weeks before the October 7 attack, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu refused to carry out a broad assassination operation targeting Hamas leaders in Gaza, despite the Shin Bet's proposal to do so. On September 13, 2023, Netanyahu inquired about available options for carrying out assassination operations. The former Shin Bet official responded that Hamas leaders could be targeted and killed in their offices within the Gaza Strip. However, Netanyahu expressed reservations about conducting large-scale aerial operations, arguing that such actions would require a significant attack and that he preferred limited and targeted operations under normal circumstances.
