Global efforts to contain Lebanon's regional tensions
The article discussed the intensive international diplomatic efforts to keep Lebanon away from potential regional escalation, especially amidst concerns that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu might undertake a military operation before or after the Israeli legislative elections. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun noted that the contacts focused on preventing the deterioration of the security situation. These efforts included American demands to halt Israeli attacks on southern Lebanon, along with coordination efforts between the Lebanese and Israeli armies to reduce miscalculations and avoid escalation. Additionally, mechanisms for monitoring border areas and cooperation between Lebanese and Israeli forces were mentioned, amid fears of a security vacuum should the UNIFIL forces' mandate not be extended. During the meetings, Aoun reaffirmed Lebanon's commitment to pursuing illegal weapons and controlling smuggling, while the United States urged accountability for those involved in smuggling explosives, continuing diplomatic efforts to prevent any military escalation that could threaten Lebanon and the region.
