Trump's Gift to Russia
Reports indicate that Trump issued an executive order to suspend sanctions and tariffs related to Russia, just days before they were due to take effect, arguing that it serves American national interests. This decision came after Trump enacted a law last September aimed at increasing pressure on Moscow over its war in Ukraine, which imposed tariffs of up to 100 percent on Russian oil and gas imports, along with sanctions on entities attempting to bypass these restrictions. However, Trump's move received criticism in Congress, with some viewing it as a gift to Putin amid tense relations with Kyiv and expectations of rising oil prices. This decision by Trump is considered a significant moment because it prevents the deterioration of economic relations between the two countries and avoids broad repercussions on economic cooperation.
