Lisbon protesters pitch tents over housing costs
Dozens of tents have been set up in Rossio Square in Lisbon to lead mass protests against the rising costs of housing and living expenses in Portugal. These protests have been ongoing for weeks and stem from a movement that began in Porto. The demonstrations are a response to the 124% increase in real estate prices between 2015 and 2024, affecting especially young people and the capital. Protesters feel that their rights, including the right to housing, are being undermined. They express their dissatisfaction with policies that favor property owners while reducing protections for tenants. The Prime Minister has warned that the atmosphere of instability may spread across the country, as the wave of protests continues amid a housing crisis in Spain, now in its fourth week.
