Meetings with Sunni MPs on amnesty law
The article discusses the meeting between Prime Minister Nohad Machnouk and a delegation of Sunni MPs to discuss the implications of the General Amnesty Law in Lebanon. The MPs affirmed that the Constitutional Council exceeded its powers regarding the interpretation of the law, and that the legislator's intent to reduce punishments will be fully implemented. They also confirmed that the law aims to protect justice and reinforce the national and humanitarian character. Additionally, the MPs pointed out that the interpretation of the law should align with the legislative intent, and that sentences related to life imprisonment and the duration of penalties will be calculated based on 17 years rather than 28 years. They emphasized that the negative interpretations issued by the Constitutional Council will not be applied, and that the process is proceeding in a manner consistent with the interests of justice and the legal text.
