Iran Threatens to Disrupt Strait Cables
Iran has issued threats to target the underwater internet cables running beneath the Strait of Hormuz, which are vital for transmitting commercial data and global communications, should the region face attacks against American technological infrastructure. A spokesperson from the Revolutionary Guards indicated that there are seven major cables upon which global internet traffic depends, and that the United States is aware that new targets may be at risk. These threats come amid an Iranian escalation linked to the stalling of negotiations to revive the nuclear deal, amidst diplomatic efforts by Pakistan to mediate between Washington and Tehran, particularly concerning an Iranian proposal to open the Strait of Hormuz within seven days, which former U.S. President Donald Trump rejected. The statements suggest that Iran may take military action against digital infrastructure in the region as tensions between the two sides escalate.
