Alberta Confirms Commitment to Canada
The wealthy oil-rich Alberta province decisively rejected organizing a referendum on secession from Canada, with proponents of Canadian unity winning over 76% of the votes, compared to 23% in favor of separation. The result followed a campaign supported by the central government led by Prime Minister Mark Carney, who affirmed that Canada and Alberta will remain together and that unity is the obvious choice. The independence movement in Alberta is politically significant due to the region's major oil reserves and is at the center of internal and external debates, especially as American interest in its role as a primary oil source grows and some figures advocate for independence.
