UN Security Council Considers UNIFIL Alternative
The article discusses the end of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) mission at the end of the year and the security and economic risks associated with it. It highlights that the absence of an independent international authority to monitor the Blue Line and report on Israeli violations could lead to increased tensions and serious incidents between the Lebanese army and the Israeli side. It also notes that talks are underway to establish an alternative multinational force, but no agreement has been reached yet, with Lebanon insisting on a different solution that reinforces its security and sovereignty. Economically, it is estimated that the withdrawal could result in direct financial losses of hundreds of millions of dollars annually, along with the loss of hundreds of direct and indirect jobs and a decline in property values in the affected areas.
