South Lebanon Prepared for New Developments
As the mandate of UNIFIL troops approaches its expiration on December 31, attention is turning to the future security situation in southern Lebanon. Lebanon is calling for an extension of its mission to continue monitoring violations and facilitate aid delivery, while the United States and Israel have expressed reservations. The European Union has approved the establishment of a new security mission for three years to support the Lebanese Army and security forces, emphasizing that its tasks differ from those of UNIFIL. Meanwhile, threats from Israel to expand the security zone are looming, along with potential changes on the ground, raising questions about whether the new arrangements can effectively prevent escalation and promote stability in the region.
