Austria Students Protest University Funding
Tens of thousands of students protested in Vienna against the budget allocated to Austrian universities, which is deemed insufficient to cope with inflation and rising costs. Participants held signs emphasizing the need to support education and consider it a fundamental right. The number of protesters is estimated at over 40,000, compared to an expected 20,000. The demonstration follows the government's announcement to maintain a university budget of 16 billion euros from 2028 to 2030, while university presidents are calling for an increase to 18 billion euros to avoid job cuts, reduce course offerings, and delay research projects—threatening Austria’s academic attractiveness and international competitiveness. Students expressed concerns about declining educational quality and its impact on healthcare, while the government emphasizes the necessity of reducing expenses and directing universities to identify essential positions, amid differing opinions on whether future funding for the education sector is sufficient.
