Pakistan is expressing “cautious optimism” about its mediation between Iran and the United States. Qatar has returned to Tehran with a draft peace proposal, but no lasting agreement has been reached. Washington insists that the nuclear issue be included in the negotiations, while Tehran demands an end to the blockade of its ports and the lifting of oil sanctions, and has withdrawn its proposal for a seven-day ceasefire. The diplomatic efforts are unfolding amid conflicting reports of incidents in the Strait of Hormuz. The Iranian navy reported explosions aboard three tankers, one of which was carrying two million barrels of oil, while Washington denied destroying an unmanned vessel. Donald Trump said the war would end soon, but did not announce that an agreement had been reached.
