The U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency has warned that Russia is developing a satellite carrying a nuclear weapon that could be detonated in Earth’s orbit, despite the 1967 Outer Space Treaty banning the placement of nuclear weapons in orbit. The report said the explosion could disrupt thousands of satellites and services such as communications, navigation and banking, while radiation belts could damage satellites for years. British Air Marshal Paul Godfrey warned that an attack on satellites could cause serious damage to the UK economy.
