Zurich and Basel in Switzerland saw youth protests on Saturday evening, marked by clashes with police. Masked individuals set up burning barricades in Zurich, while Basel saw an unauthorized march and vandalism that temporarily disrupted public transport. The demonstrations are part of a European “Gen Z” protest wave calling for lower living and housing costs, greater investment in education and mental health, opposition to austerity and the reinstatement of conscription, and stronger climate action. German cities also saw demonstrations involving tens of thousands of people; some turned into clashes, during which police used water cannons.
