Maronite Patriarch Cardinal Mar Bechara Boutros al-Rahi said that preventing Lebanon from being dragged into a new war is a major national responsibility. He affirmed that the Lebanese want peace and reject a war that would bring nothing but destruction and displacement. He stressed that decisions of war and peace must rest solely with the state, and that placing weapons exclusively in the hands of its legitimate institutions is essential to sovereignty, stability and the protection of the country.
