Qatari mediation to avert a resumption of war between the United States and Iran has entered its final hours, as mediators await the two sides’ responses within 36 hours to a proposal for an interim agreement. Tehran has made a halt to the war on all fronts, including Lebanon, a condition for any understanding. It said the Strait of Hormuz would not be opened until Washington implemented its seven conditions, and described the U.S. response as unconvincing. An Iranian official said an agreement remained a long way off, while U.S. President Donald Trump said he had struck an air-defense facility on Qeshm Island.
