A White House official described the atmosphere in the presidency as “challenging” after Democrats made gains in the midterm elections, and said Donald Trump would continue to confront the “radical left,” whatever the results. Preliminary results showed Democrats winning 244 seats in the House of Representatives, compared with 191 for Republicans. In the Senate, they had won 46 seats to the Republicans’ 38 as of 3 a.m. GMT. Losing control of the House could allow Democrats to block Trump’s agenda and launch investigations into his administration.
