U.S. President Donald Trump stated that the United States considers its unilateral relations with NATO "ridiculous," just less than a week before the alliance's summit in Ankara. He criticized the alliance countries, saying they did not assist when Washington needed them, indicating that America's relationship with the alliance is not mutual. Trump also continued his criticism of European allies' stance on the Iran conflict, mentioning that NATO countries let the United States down in this war, despite Washington claiming it toppled Iran in just one week. On his part, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg confirmed that European countries will increase their defense spending in the upcoming period to strengthen the alliance's capabilities and respond to security challenges.
