The United Nations announced the end of the MINURSO mission after 35 years, following the Security Council’s decision not to renew its mandate, which expired at midnight on October 31, 2026. On November 1, the mission began winding down under the supervision of a small team responsible for returning equipment belonging to contributing countries, or transferring and disposing of UN equipment. The Secretary-General expressed concern about the security situation and the risk of hostilities escalating, called on the parties to exercise restraint and cooperate, and reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to supporting efforts to reach a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution.
