The CAF award nominees have raised questions, as the list appears to be based largely on Africa’s representation at the World Cup. Tunisia was included despite losing all three of its matches, conceding 12 goals and scoring just two, while Nigeria—third-place finisher at the Africa Cup of Nations and a World Cup semi-finalist—was left out. Morocco is the frontrunner after reaching the World Cup quarter-finals, ranking sixth in the world and topping FIFA’s African national-team rankings. Senegal, Algeria, Côte d’Ivoire, Egypt and Tunisia are also in the running, while established sides such as Cameroon were omitted.
