Netherlands reduces refugee residence terms
The Dutch government has proposed to abolish permanent residence for new refugees and to reduce the duration of temporary residency from five years to three years, starting from June 2026, as part of tightening asylum and migration policies. The amendment includes the inability for refugees who have received protection under the new law to apply for permanent residence, while the status of those currently holding permanent residence remains unchanged. These measures are part of efforts to prepare for the new European Migration and Asylum Pact and have elicited mixed reactions from supporters and opponents alike.
