United Nations General Assembly Presidency
The United Nations General Assembly elected Khalil Al-Rahman as President for the 81st session (2026-2027), succeeding German Annalena Baerbock, after he received 99 votes out of 190, surpassing his Cypriot rival Andreas Kakouris, who obtained 91 votes. Khalil Al-Rahman will preside over the Assembly's proceedings during a period facing challenges related to peace, security, and development. He reaffirmed his commitment to addressing conflicts and wars, with a focus on reforming UN mechanisms and strengthening efforts towards peace and sustainable development. UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized that the world is going through a phase that requires greater international cooperation to confront conflicts, inequality, and climate crises.
