Five non-permanent members were elected to the United Nations Security Council for the 2027-2028 term during the General Assembly session. Portugal and Austria secured the seats after Germany failed to obtain the necessary majority, while Zimbabwe, Trinidad and Tobago, Kyrgyzstan, Portugal, and Austria received enough votes to qualify for membership. These countries will begin their terms on the Security Council starting January 2027, succeeding Somalia, Pakistan, Panama, Denmark, and Greece. Austria and Portugal are among the countries that have previously held Security Council seats multiple times, whereas Kyrgyzstan has never held this position before.
