UN appoints 5 new Security Council members
The Security Council elections resulted in the appointment of five new members for the period from January 2027 to December 2028, including Austria and Portugal from Western Europe, Zimbabwe and Trinidad and Tobago from Africa and Latin America, and Kyrgyzstan from Asia and the Pacific. European countries are focusing on supporting the Moroccan autonomy initiative as a solution to the dispute in Western Sahara, while some African nations like Zimbabwe continue to support the Polisario Front, despite the limited impact of that stance within the UN's political process. This new composition is seen as a continuation of trends supporting the Moroccan initiative and the pursuit of a political and permanent resolution to the conflict.
