Spanish report links Morocco cooperation to fewer asylum requests
The Spanish Committee for Refugee Assistance reported that asylum applications in Spain decreased by 13.7% in 2025, a decline linked to cooperation with Morocco in border monitoring and combating irregular migration. Despite this decrease, Spain remains the third largest recipient of asylum claims in the European Union, with ongoing challenges due to changing migrant crossing routes and an increase in fatalities during sea attempts. The organization called for strengthening asylum mechanisms and expanding legal pathways, amid ongoing discussions on balancing border management with the rights of protection seekers.
