The article discusses a potential risk to the dollar arising from increased investor hedging against the currency, primarily through foreign exchange sale contracts, without selling the U.S. assets themselves. It indicates that approximately $230 billion worth of transactions could be generated if investors raise their hedging levels by 5 percentage points—a change that could occur without an immediate financial crisis or a wave of asset sales. The article highlights that a simple shift in investor behavior, such as increased hedging of the dollar due to a decline in its value or loss of its appeal as a safe haven, could exert significant downward pressure on the currency in a cascading manner, leading to a sharp fall in its value without large-scale exits from stocks or bonds. The greatest danger is that turning risk management into collective pressure on the dollar might create a vicious cycle of market tension, as investors continue to hold U.S. assets but increase their hedge against the dollar, thereby accelerating its decline substantially.
