Al Jazeera’s investigation, *What Lies Beneath*, presented testimonies, recordings and documents about Mohammed Deif’s career and his leadership of the Qassam Brigades, and examined preparations for the October 7 attack. Among the materials was a February 2023 document concerning the start of preparations for “Project Fahd,” with the possibility of cancelling it if Israeli attacks stopped, and another document related to the order to carry it out on October 5. The investigation highlighted the importance of preserving the Palestinian archive, verifying documents and placing them in context—as a way to safeguard memory and document the experience in the voices of those who lived it.
