UN Reports Ebola Costs Africa $3.6B
The United Nations Development Programme warned that the Ebola epidemic outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo could result in economic losses of up to $3.6 billion and push around 985,000 people into poverty, with tens of thousands of jobs lost. The report indicated that restrictions on movement and trade, despite their importance for health, could weaken local economies and threaten the livelihoods of those working in the informal sector, emphasizing that the impacts extend to neighboring countries such as Uganda, Rwanda, and South Sudan.
